Subject: [TokyoJALT-announce] Video Workshop Event Report and Coming
Attractions
Message-ID: <20090802033559.404559207@smtp.kamakuranet.ne.jp>
Dear Members,
I hope your August has gotten off to a great start!
First of all, there are several events coming up -- the Tokyo Chapter
website has the full list with details.
Just as a reminder:
- 1 - 28 August (and 17 - 23 September) -- PRIVILEGE Photo Exhibition
(Reception is Monday evening, 7 -8 p.m.)
- 17 September (Thu) -- Pragmatics Workshop
- 11 October (Sun) -- Tokyo Joint Conference (details should be up in
the next week or so; this one-day conference is sponsored by West Tokyo
Chapter, Tokyo Chapter, and several publishers. This year's theme:
Successful Language Learners and What They Can Teach Us)
Secondly, I'd like to share the official report, submitted by Jim
McKinley, on the Video Workshop that Tokyo Chapter held in June.:
"Video Materials Production for the Digitally Challenged", by Nicholas
O. Jungheim, Waseda University.
For many teachers, advances in technology are overwhelming, and even
though they may possess video cameras and editing software, they may
have never used them for the classroom. Jungheim's workshop was a
practical "hands-on" experience for the great variety of teachers who
attended. After prefacing the workshop with explanation and examples of
how video materials can be used in language classes, attendees were
separated into groups to first storyboard their language lesson, then
film it, and finally to edit it. Within approximately 3 hours, the
participants were able to overcome their fears and confusion with their
video materials.
And a note from the organizer, Prof. Nick Jungheim:
It was amazing to see some of the creative results of participants'
endeavors. We even had a clever movie for teaching Chinese! I really
appreciated the enthusiasm that all of the participants put into their
productions. Thanks!!
Finally, if you have any inclination to make a presentation, please let
us know. You can send me a message or use the contact form on the JALT
website (it is also accessible via the Tokyo Chapter website).
Thank you and best regards,
Kevin Cleary
