Dear Members,

Thank you for all the kind messages about our recent events. I have
passed them on to the organizers. I'm glad to say that we have a few
more events in the pipeline, and we'll send out notices soon.

Today, I'd like to let you know the new contact email address for

information on our Chapter memberships.

TOKYO CHAPTER MEMBERSHIP

I'm very glad to announce that we have had a net increase of 50 members
in the 11 months from 8/1/2008 to 7/1/2009. In all, we have gone from
355 paid up members to 405.

If you would like to renew your membership (personally, I think it is an
excellent idea!), please go to the JALT website to renew online
(<www.jalt.org/>). If you wish to renew in a different manner, please
let me know at the address below, and I will be happy to help you:

By the way, many people move in and out of the Tokyo Chapter. Each month
there are about 10 members who transfer to a new Chapter, and about 5
who arrive in Tokyo Chapter. If you have moved, or wish to be reassigned
to another chapter, just let me know. We'll be glad to keep you on the
mailing list, of course.

As the reconciliation below shows, the net increase of 50 members is not
quite the whole story. In the past 11 months we have had 86 brand-new
members and 92 members who renewed from prior years or who moved in to
Tokyo Chapter from another Chapter. For your reference, I subscribe new
members to this mailing list with a short welcome message and some
information about the Chapter. 

Many of the 135 members who left Tokyo Chapter are still in JALT; almost
all of them are still on the mailing list.

Anyway, here are some details on the numbers:

August 2008:

Dear members,

I am very glad to pass along a summary of our recent Tokyo Chapter
event, "English Skills Curriculum Design and Implementation: Meeting the
demand for English skills, EAP, ESP and Content-based programs," by
Heath Rose. 

It was a great event -- we had 25 participants, as well as several
officers who were present for administrative work. Many thanks to
participant and member Kregg Johnston for writing up the event report!

in the Chapter Events column of The Language Teacher in a coming month.

## EVENT REPORT ##

English Skills Curriculum Design and Implementation: Meeting the demand
for English skills, EAP, ESP and Content-based programs, by Heath Rose. 

The workshop began with a discussion of the trend at many Japanese
universities to provide more content-based instruction and how Rikkyo
University?s Department of Global Business has adapted its curriculum in
a similar manner. The department has designed its curriculum through
project-based learning to prepare the students for more challenging
content courses later in their studies. The curriculum is student-
centered and contains a variety of linked courses to prepare the
students for enrollment in content or content-based courses. This
demanding curriculum requires the students to do a considerable amount
of preparatory work before each class in order to allow productive
language interaction and sharing of ideas while developing critical
thinking skills. After that, there was a small-group discussion on
curriculum organization and effectiveness. Then, it was demonstrated how
the department set its course objectives. Finally, the workshop was
wrapped up with an explanation of the importance of course evaluation in
order to check whether or not objectives are being met and if those
objectives are appropriate. Through the use of carefully designed
questionnaires, interviews, and focus groups, the Department of Global
Business is able to ascertain program effectiveness and content
suitability and take quick action whenever problems with the curriculum arise.

Tokyo Chapter is pleased to invite you to PRIVILEGE, a photo exhibition
by Gary McLeod, a UK-based artist.

Gary has taken very striking photos of English teachers based in Japan.
He used a hybrid camera that combined an antique camera with a modern

Gary's photos will be exhibited at the Foreign Correspondents' Club of
Japan (FCCJ) during August and at ZAP for one week in September.

### Tokyo Chapter Logo Design Competition -- From the Publicity Co-chairs ###

Dear members,

We had a logo design competition earlier this year and the board has
chosen one with a very artistic touch which also complements the
national logo. We extend our congratulations to the winner, Robert Li
from the Hitachi Institute of Management Development, for his design and
