This event has been organized with the aid of the Pragmatics SIG. Please be sure to pre-register if you plan to go! Kate and John's talk arises from a book they published this year, "Reading Japan Cool: Patterns of Manga Literacy and Discourse". For information on their book, which, among other topics, explores the reading strategies our students use when reading manga, please visit the publisher's website: D E T A I L S ============== Title: Interpreting meaning in popular media products: Censorship and readers Abstract: When writing about a popular culture medium, it is difficult to avoid the issues of "harmful content." Manga, for example, has become popular among many young people around the world. In North America, this popularity occurs where there has been a history of censorship of comics. As practitioners of discourse analysis, we were surprised to discover that the analytical methods of media control activists were very similar to those of critical approaches to discourse. While similarities between them exist, we found there were fundamental differences. These differences lay in divergent ways to interpret text. This has led us to developing a comprehensive framework of media interpretation. Bio: John E. Ingulsrud and Kate Allen are authors of Reading Japan Cool: Patterns of Manga Literacy and Discourse (Lanham, MD: Rowman & Littlefield, 2009). John teaches in the International Studies Department at Meisei University. Kate teaches at Meiji University's School of Global Japanese Studies. John was born and raised in Japan and has been a JALT member for over thirty years. Kate was born and raised in Zimbabwe. She has taught in Thailand, as well as in Zimbabwe. Both John and Kate taught in China. Their first book, Learning to Read in China: Sociolinguistic Perspectives on the Acquisition of Literacy (Lewiston, NY: The Edwin Mellen Press, 1999) was based on research during their career in China. New deadline: 2 November (Mon) (it was 26 October) The reason for the extended deadline is that this year we had a series of ads in the Daily Yomiuri. These ads have helped generate a large increase in pre-registration, especially by first-time conference goers, and the publicity team wants to continue to attract new registrants. I believe the attached ad (linked below) will be in Monday's Daily Yomiuri, so I'd like to pass it on to you just in case you don't see it in the newspaper. As of this writing, the JALT website has not yet been updated, but it should be very soon: Thank you and best regards, Kevin Cleary Tokyo Chapter Membership Chair -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed...
