Thank you and best regards, Kevin Cleary Tokyo Chapter Membership Chair ## Nakasendo English Conference 2010 - "Teachers as Learners, Learners as Teachers" ## Sunday, June 20, 2010, Tokyo Kasei University, Jujo, Itabashi-ku, Tokyo-to This year's theme will focus on the experiences of teachers as language learners, and language learners as teachers, bringing together the experiences of Japanese teachers of English in coming full circle from being learners of English to being teachers of it, the experiences of native English teachers in their learning of Japanese, and non-native teachers of English, Japanese, or other languages. The Nakasendo Cooperative is a multiorganizational teaching cooperative based in the Kanto but reaching out throughout Japan. We began humbly with our first conference in 2008 at Seigakuin University in Saitama with the aim of bringing together different teaching groups and organizations - native-speaker, non-native speaker, and Japanese teacher of English alike, all on an equal footing. The Nakasendo 2009 conference was held at Tokyo Kasei University in June of last year and the theme, "Paths to Learning," sought to build new relationships between individuals and organizations which previously had limited or no contact with each other. Last year we had the illustrious Kensaku Yoshida of Sophia University as our featured speaker, and for Nakasendo 2010, we have two featured speakers - one foreign and one Japanese, respectively Marcos Benevides of J.F Oberlin University and Masaki Kobayashi of the Kanda University of International Studies. One of our unique features is the use of an online document called a Google Doc that can be edited and updated by anyone who wishes to participate in our planning and organization. We also have a wiki at that anyone is welcome to check out at their convenience. Our planning and organization is undertaken within the spirit of cooperation, with each participant sharing the power to develop the conference according to his or her own vision. For preregistration and further information please check our website at . ## End ## From kcleary at me.com Fri Apr 16 11:16:16 2010 From: kcleary at me.com (kevin cleary) Date: Sat, 17 Apr 2010 00:16:16 +0900 Subject: [TokyoJALT-announce] TIRF Doctoral Dissertation Grant competition -- deadline 15 May 2010 Message-ID: <20100416151616.2030071318@smtp.me.com> Dear members, It is my pleasure to pass along the below information about the TIRF 2010 Doctoral Dissertation Grant (DDG) competition, applications for which are due by 15 May 2010. >From the website: "The DDG funding is intended to support worthy applicants who have advanced to candidacy or the dissertation phase in their doctoral programs and whose dissertation research plans address topics that TIRF has prioritized. First, I'd like to announce that the search for the "Seeking English Teacher for 6-Week Maternity Leave Position" job (posted on 16 April) is now "closed" as the school has found a pool of qualified applicants and is now going about the process of selecting final candidates. Many thanks to those who responded! ## Second, several people have recently asked about the discount that JALT members can enjoy on Apple computers. I put together a quick comparison, and the linked file (.pdf) has more information. As it turns out, academic purchasers typically get a 7% - 10% discount while JALT members get a 10% - 13% discount. For example, if you were to use the online JALT Apple Store, you would currently save 4,000 yen on a new MacBook Pro, compared to the normal academic price. However, if you are a JALT member who is not working at an educational institution and are thus ineligible for the academic discount, you would be able to save over 14,000 yen from the list price on such a purchase thanks to your being a JALT member. Nice, eh? If you want to take advantage of this program, all you have to do is input your name, email address and JALT number on the log in page at . You will then be able to access the JALT Apple Store. Please note that this program is offered through the _Online_ Apple Store, which is in a different division from the retail Apple Stores. Some typical discounts (see the linked file for more information): MacBook List price: ?98,800 Academic price: 88,800 JALT price: 85,247 MacBook Pro List price: ?114,800 Academic Price: 104,400 (9.06% discount from list price) JALT price: 100,225 (12.70% discount from list price, which translates to a 28.64% better discount than the normal academic discount) Mac Pro List price: ?278,800 Academic price: 256,800 JALT price: 246,527 Also, please note I have no affiliation with Apple, Inc.! I'm just passing along a benefit of membership. If you have any questions about the program, your JALT ID number or your membership status, please do let me know or send a message to JALT Central Office at . How, for example, are learners supposed to address strangers, close friends, or people of higher social status in that culture? While acquiring discourse practices can take learners many years, research has shown that the process can be facilitated through explicit instruction. This institute provides practical insights for teachers on how to enhance the learning of pragmatics. Participants will have hands-on opportunities to develop activities and materials for the classroom. Testimonials from past participants: Becoming aware and excited about new aspects of teaching are an important part of our continual development as instructors. The professional quality of the workshop, the ideas and experiences of other participants will definitely result in benefits for my students. I like being on the "cutting edge" of the new book by Noriko and Andrew. I like know about their research and I especially like the warm invitation and access they offered throughout the week... I especially like how much lateral learning exists. The instructors are always good but the room is filled with expertise and it's wonderful to share and learn from each other and to have that valued.
