Dear Tokyo Chapter members,

We are pleased to announce that Mr. Peter Cassidy has been selected as

will thus be representing Tokyo Chapter at the Hiroshima
Mini-conference on March 28th, 2010. We are glad to be able to support
his presentation, and are looking forward to his report, which will be
published in the Tokyo Chap'zine after the conference.
We'd also like to tell all members to keep your eyes open for future
chapter offerings and consider submitting to the the Chap'zine!

President, Tokyo Chapter
on behalf of the JALT Tokyo Chapter Grant Selection Committee
## Title and Abstract for the Selected Presentation ##
a. *Title of the presentation*:
Respecting L1 Use in L2 Learning: Maintaining Creativity and ?Social Development
b. *Presentation Abstract:*
Through a videotaped study of pre-kindergarten Japanese children
within an L2 learning context, it was determined that re-directing
children away from using their L1 not only stifled their ability to
socialize optimally, but also affected their creativity. ?Tangible
quantitative evidence revealed through this block play study, in
unison with the qualitative analysis of thirteen TESOL graduate
students, was the catalyst for a revealing survey that brings to light
the need for policy change with regards to language use in young
learner L2 classrooms. ?The presentation will consist of video
footage, the survey analysis, as well as a look at alternatives to
re-directing children away from using their L1 in an L2 learning
environment. ?The presentation should empower audience members to
discuss how L1 only policies for pre-K classrooms may in fact stifle
language development, limit optimal social development, as well as
negatively affect creativity.

## Seminar by Dr. Gabriele Kasper -- New Room ##
JALT Tokyo Chapter is pleased to announce the following seminar which
will be conducted by Dr. Gabriele Kasper of the University of Hawai'i at
Manoa.
Title: "Talking Emotion in a Second Language"
Date: 29 March 2010 (Monday)
Time: 19:00 - 20:30
Location: Waseda University Toyama Campus, Room 32-225 (Building 32 Room
225).
For further information about the room / location, please visit:
.
Fee: Free for JALT members; 1,000 yen for non-JALT members.
RSVP: Space is limited for participation in this seminar. If you are
interested in attending, please contact Megumi Kawate-Mierzejewska
(Program Chair) at:
Abstract: As a topic in second language studies, emotions have been
investigated from a variety of perspectives: as "individual difference"
variables, as goal and process in language socialization, as matters of
multilingual speakers' competencies, or as experiences available through
learner narratives. This seminar examines emotion talk in a second
language through the lens of discursive psychology. By analyzing
emotions as interactional and rhetorical constructions, it becomes
possible to show how participants engage emotion talk to accomplish
social activities such as assigning blame, claiming and rejecting
identities, and defending their moral integrity.
A brief CV of Dr. Kasper is available here:

## ER Colloquium at JALT National Conference, 2010 ##
Call for Papers for the ER Colloquium at JALT National Conference, 2010
Deadline: 23rd April, 2010
The JALT ER SIG invites proposals from researchers in Extensive Reading
or Extensive Listening to speak at the biggest ER event at the 2010 JALT
National Conference "Creativity: Think outside the box" in Nagoya,
November 19th-22nd.

see each others' presentations. Each presenter will have five minutes to
speak to the whole audience. At the end of several five- minute
sessions, presenters will break out and listeners will be able to ask
any of the presenters more about their topic. Hopefully this will
combine the focus of large presentations with the freedom of a poster
session.
Please send applications, or any questions, to
Applications should include:
1. Your name
2. Your affiliation
3. A title
4. An abstract of around 50-100 words.
Applicants may submit more than one topic. This may allow the organisers
to make the colloquium more cohesive.
